An Overview of Ozone Generators and Their Working
An ozone generator is a specific kind of device that converts oxygen from numerous sources (concentrated oxygen, dry air, and ambient air) into ozone. It is also referred to as ozone machine in many parts of the world.
Ozone generators generate ozone by adding energy to the molecules of oxygen. In the process, oxygen disintegrates and recombines temporarily with other oxygen molecules. The ozone produced can be used for air purification and water disinfection. To get the best results, combine them with Alpine Air Purifier ozone plates.
Ozone generators can be compact in size (hand-held devices), useful for regular applications, or they can also be large-scale models that are specifically useful for numerous industrial applications. Industrial ozone generators require very pure and clean air to generate high ozone concentrations.
How Do Ozone Generators Work?
These devices apply an electrical charge to the air passing by and then split the normal oxygen atoms into unstable oxygen atoms. These bond with each other to form ozone. The ozone produced reacts with the contaminants. A process called oxidation breaks these contaminants into less complex components. The ozone that does not interact with the contaminants would gradually decompose into oxygen. The working process of ozone generators removes odors and disinfects the air and water. Manufacturers claim that ozone can render almost all contaminants harmless. That said, you need to follow proper safety guidelines, understand the type (and structure) of contaminants, and install the most suitable ozone generation unit.
In a natural environment, ozone generation takes place in two ways – sunlight and lightning strikes. During the event of a thunderstorm, you will most likely get the smell of ozone. The fresh and clean aroma we notice after a thunderstorm is most likely the result of nature’s creation of ozone. For the other type of ozone generation process, oxygen gets broken down in the presence of UV light from the sun. It allows the formation of ozone.
Ozone generators recreate these two processes but in a controlled setting and environment. It leads to two key types of ozone generators – corona discharge and UV light generators.
Corona discharge – Here, the machine creates ozone by taking oxygen and applying it through a high-voltage grid. This splits the oxygen molecule into single atoms. These then attach to other oxygen molecules to form ozone.
UV light – UV light transforms oxygen into ozone when a wavelength of 254 nm shoots into the oxygen atom. This process is less efficient than corona discharge. That said, this process costs less than corona discharge and is simpler to assemble and use.
Types of Ozone Generation Feed Gas
Ozone has a short life, thanks to the instability of the molecule. It also gets quite difficult to store or transport. That is primarily the reason why ozone needs to be generated on-site. Based on your specific requirements and applications, ozone can be created from one of these three sources – concentrated oxygen, dry air, or ambient air.
